N-VisionIT CIO Reid Ivens’ story of bootstrapping success endeared him to judges of Ottawa’s prestigious Forty Under 40 Award for entrepreneurial leaders.

When Reid Ivens found out he’d won the prestigious Forty Under 40 award, the entrepreneur reflected on the 15 years that have followed since co-founding N-VisionIT, one of the leading Ottawa web and mobile development firms. He remembered all the clients, small and Fortune 500 alike; all the investment properties he and his partner amassed, one by one, to 18 doors in 18 months; and all the hours spent architecting a recently launched business management software that will help business owners everywhere.

“One of the most important lessons I’ve learned about doing business over the last 15 years is to never give up, to persevere,” says Ivens. “And then someday, when you’re receiving the Forty Under 40 award, you can think, ‘Thank God I didn’t throw in the towel.’”

Ivens co-founded N-VisionIT with CEO Brent Mondoux, who was named a Forty Under 40 recipient in 2013. The award, co-hosted by the Ottawa Business Journal and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, recognizes the achievements of local business leaders.

“I’m very proud to be recognized alongside such an impressive group of business people,” says Ivens, whose bootstrapping story was selected from 250 applications. “I’ve put my heart and soul into building a business that helps others reach their goals, and it’s great to know those efforts are recognized by my peers and local business leaders.”

Under Ivens’ leadership alongside Mondoux, N-VisionIT has created hundreds of websites, mobile applications and social media marketing campaigns for the likes of Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. The firm was recently named Canada’s Best Android App Developer by Best Web Design Agencies.

Ivens says a big part of what has made N-VisionIT so successful over the last 15 years is the company’s very own web-based business management software. In fact, because the easy-to-use platform automates almost every business function, from payroll to sales reports, Ivens decided to bring the cloud-based BusinessManage.com to market so other businesses could enjoy saving time and money as well as an advantage over competitors.

“The timing of this award is particularly significant because of the recent launch of our new service offering, BusinessManage.com,” says Ivens. “This software helped get us to where we are today, and I look forward to helping other entrepreneurs use it to succeed and find more time to focus on the tasks they love that drew them into business in the first place.”

Ivens will receive his Forty Under 40 award along with 39 of his peers June 19 at a gala at the Hilton Lac-Leamy.

Rails just keeps on changing. Rails 3 and Ruby 1.9 bring hundreds of improvements, including new APIs and substantial performance enhancements. The fourth edition of this award-winning classic has been reorganized and refocused so it’s more useful than ever before for developers new to Ruby and Rails.

Rails 3 is a major release–the changes aren’t just incremental, but structural. So we decided to follow suit. This book isn’t just a mild reworking of the previous edition to make it run with the new Rails. Instead, it’s a complete refactoring.

You’ll still find the Depot example at the front, but you’ll also find testing knitted right in. Gone are the long reference chapters–that’s what the web does best. Instead you’ll find more targeted information on all the aspects of Rails that you’ll need to be a successful Web developer.

Now Updated for Rails 3.2

Rails 3.1 and Rails 3.2 introduce many user-facing changes, and this release has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails 3.1 and Rails 3.2. This includes full support for Ruby 1.9.2 hash syntax; incorporation of the new Sprockets 2.0 Asset Pipeline, including SCSS and CoffeeScript; jQuery now being the default; reversible migrations; JSON response support; Rack::Cache, and much more.

Ruby on Rails helps you produce high-quality, beautiful-looking web applications quickly. You concentrate on creating the application, and Rails takes care of the details.

Tens of thousands of developers have used this award-winning book to learn Rails. It’s a broad, far-reaching tutorial and reference that’s recommended by the Rails core team. If you’re new to Rails, you’ll get step-by-step guidance. If you’re an experienced developer, this book will give you the comprehensive, insider information you need.

Rails has evolved over the years, and this book has evolved along with it. We still start with a step-by-step walkthrough of building a real application, and in-depth chapters look at the built-in Rails features. This edition now gives new Ruby and Rails users more information on the Ruby language and takes more time to explain key concepts throughout. Best practices on how to apply Rails continue to change, and this edition keeps up. Examples use cookie backed sessions, HTTP authentication, and Active Record-based forms, and the book focuses throughout on the right way to use Rails. Additionally, this edition now reflects Ruby 1.9, a new release of Ruby with substantial functional and performance improvements.
